Research and Findings

The Fiscal Year 2010 Defense Appropriation Act authorized $18.75 million to the Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Research Program
(OCRP) administered by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (http://cdmrp.army.mil) of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. The OCRP stimulates and supports innovative, integrated, multidisciplinary research in the etiology, detection, prevention and control of ovarian cancer. Within this context, priorities and target award levels are set annually by an expert panel, which includes ovarian cancer survivor advocates. Ovarian cancer survivors also participate in the peer review of proposals. Since its inception in 1997, over 210 awards have been made through Fiscal year
2009 and the OCRP has received nearly $161 million from Congress through Fiscal Year 2010. The CDMRP website posts current research highlights from the Ovarian Cancer Research Program at http://cdmrp.army.mil/ocrp/highlights.shtml.

1) President Bush signed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2006 Department of Defense (DoD) Appropriations Act authorizing an additional $10 million dollars to the Ovarian Cancer Research Program. Last year the FY 2005 DoD Appropriation Act provided $10 million for the DoD OCRP. The staff members of the Ovarian Cancer Research Program are preparing the final details of new funding opportunities for ovarian cancer research to be released within the next two months.

2) The CDMRP website has been posting short summaries of research accomplishments from the Ovarian Cancer Research Program. In 2005 titles of these research highlights were:

The International Cancer Research Portfolio: New Internet Web Site for Cancer Research
Now you can look up any topic area in cancer research and find hundreds of internationally funded research projects, find out who is doing them, where the research is taking place, how much money was involved, and be able to read an abstract of the research. All at one user-friendly web site. The International Cancer Research Portfolio (ICRP), is a database created by a consortium of international cancer research funding organizations. In addition to obvious benefits for cancer patients and their families, the ICRP will also allow scientists to identify possible collaborators, plan their next research applications, and start dialogues with other researchers. Moreover, up to date information on current research will aid cancer-funding organizations in planning future priorities in research spending. The goal is to improve cancer research planning and ensure that valuable research funds are used with maximum impact to benefit cancer patients. Created by three members of the Common Science Outline Partners (CSO), a collaborative group composed of cancer funding organizations on both sides of the Atlantic, the ICRP is a database containing current peer-reviewed cancer research.

Here in the United States, this effort was spearheaded by the Nation Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Department of Defense Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). The international partner was the United Kingdom National Cancer Research Institute, a consortium of fifteen government, charity, and private cancer research funders. In addition to the NCI and CDMRP, the other United States members of the CSO include the American Cancer Society, Prostate Cancer Foundation (formerly CapCURE, Susan G. Komen Foundation, California Breast Cancer Research Program, California Cancer Research Program, and the Oncology Nursing Society of America. The ICRP currently holds nearly 13,000 records, providing information on funding organizations, institutions awarded, principal investigators, and detailed abstracts of the research. More information about the ICRP is available in a press release found at http://cdmrp.army.mil and on the ICRP web site http://www.cancerportfolio.org. Consider placing a link on your web site to both of these research resource web sites.
